What to Prepare for Emergency Situations
In the Philippines, natural calamities like typhoons and earthquakes are very common. The Philippines get over 20 typhoons annually. Some of these typhoons could be only Signal No. 1, the weakest type, but some could really be destructive just like the holocaust-like "Typhoon Yolanda" which damaged not only properties, but also killed thousands of people in the Visayas region, especially in Tacloban, Leyte.
Some people would have their own list of things to bring and do during emergency situations. I guess that depends on what each one would prioritize. It really does not matter, as long as people prepare for eventualities and most of all, as long as they have the presence of mind to get the things that they ought to get before tragedy happens.
In preparing for emergency situations, there are two basic steps a: what to prepare in case a calamity strikes and what to do after the calamity, while in the evacuation centers. Well, as a responsible individual, we should always remember that we are responsible for our own safety. We can only depend on the government up to a certain level, but ultimately, we are responsible for our own lives. Here are the steps to observe and do as preparation for emergency situations.
1) Monitor - Listen to the news be it from the radio or television or through online sources. Monitoring will help a lot in preparing should there be a storm surge, an aftershock, flashflood, landslides, etc.
2) Have an emergency bag ready (at all times if possible) and put the following inside: no-cook food items like tuna, bread, sandwich spread, sardines, candies, some 3-in-one coffee, water, sanitary napkins, face towel, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo in sachets, underwear, easy-dry clothing, detergent, band-aids, common otc medicines like paracetamol, batteries and flashlight.
3) At the first signs of a strong storm, fire, etc. Get an easy-carry bag and put the following inside: IDs, cash, cellphone, charger.
4) If you can pack the following in another bag and put in the emergency bag: Important documents and important gadgets like laptop.
5) Always have a plan as to the 3 things you would grab when an emergency occurs: Like for instance: emergency bag, personal bag (easy-carry), and laptop (for me at least) because I use the laptop in my work.
I have to admit that I am so paranoid that whenever I hear there is a strong typhoon coming to the PAR, I always make a mental note on what I should grab whenever I can feel signs of intermittent rain, flooding and strong winds. And when everything is ready, I sit back and monitor by watching tv. After securing all the things you will likely need, you can now start texting your friends and your relatives and ask them how they are, and how they are preparing in case the worse happens. This is also the time that you plan where you will gather or meet once the worse is over. And also designate the focal person that every one will text once the worse is over. Just don't forget to load your cell phone and charge it fully.
