A Warning to Tourists in Lapu-Lapu...

Some hospitals in Lapu-Lapu City should be closed for violating environmental laws! who would think that hospitals can be very irresponsible in disposing off their medical waste?  Just yesterday, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) revealed that about 50 kilograms of medical waste were collected since January 5th of this year believed to be from three private hospitals in the Lapu-Lapu area, these are:    Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue Cancer Center, Dr. Ignacio Cortes General Hospital, and UCMed.  Imagine that!

The waste products were estimated to be two to three weeks old because of the unbearable stench.  It's unbelievable that these institutions who are supposed to be helping in the reduction of diseases among people by promoting healthy practices are the ones endangering public health.     Because of this, Dr. Realiza of the city health office informed the public of a possible contamination of the sea water because a lot of the waste materials drifted to Mactan Channel.

Now, you want to know what are some of these hospital wastes?  Brace yourself for this will shock you.  The sanitary inspector was not prepared for what he saw...when they opened the yellow garbage bags, what he saw were syringes, gloves, chemical bottles and others.  Some were even believed to have been used for HIV patients.

As of this writing, the dumper, already identified as DCECI (Davao City Environmental Care Inc) had been issued a cease and desist order for numerous infractions, one of which is dumping hazardous wastes outside of its facility.  Now,  I hope someone did a background check on this company before the City of Lapu-lapu hired DCECI to dispose their waste properly.  This violation might not have occurred if someone did due diligence regarding DCECI to prevent this from happening again.

If you are a tourist coming to Lapu-lapu and planning to swim in its waters, survey the area first before diving in, or you might find some bloody thing floating towards you.
