There's Tea and there is the Deadly Milk Tea

Tea is considered a healthy beverage.  According to studies there are many benefits that tea gives our body.  Among the benefits we get are:  better dental health, healthier circulatory system, lower cholesterol, anti-cancer qualities, it's an antioxidant and an antiviral agent, and a host of other disease preventing characteristics.   Studies have shown that it is best to drink tea before dinner in order for the stomach to get filled up partially and also before going to bed to feel relaxed and mentally destressed.   I am a tea-lover and I like to put lemon and honey in my tea for two reasons:  to add zest to my drink and also to reduce the bitterness.

Lately, the market has been infused with this new beverage called 'milk tea.'  All of a sudden, there is a milk tea branch in every corner of the city.   Milk tea is a beverage that is part of the culture of people from Hong Kong.   It is black tea mixed with milk, usually evaporated milk.  Other flavors has since been concocted and created and different add-ons like tapioca and black jelly give it an additional texture.  It gained popularity over the past five years in the Philippines.  However, for those with lactose-intolerance, like me, I don't patronize it.  I'd go for the old-fashioned tea bag dipped in hot water, with honey and lemon.

Lately, an incident involving the milk tea made it to the headlines and it is making people think twice before drinking it.  Two people lost their lives upon drinking milk tea:  a customer and the owner of the establishment.  At first, it was thought that the poisonous cyanide was added to the milk tea prepared for the customer who showed signs of poisoning and died in less than five minutes. The said milk tea was also drank by the owner, who wants to show the male companion of the customer that his milk tea is safe.  However, he himself died afterwards.   Authorities, however, could not find any poison or chemicals inside the area of the store or establishment and even in the tea itself.  To this day, days after that incident, authorities are in no way close to determining the real reason behind the deaths after drinking milk tea.  Meanwhile, many milk tea shops have been ordered closed while investigations are on-going, and sad to say, former patrons of milk tea are not touching milk tea until the mystery of the deadly milk tea is solved.
